The basics

What goes on a cleaning checklist?

A cleaning checklist lists every task for one job in the order you do it, so nothing gets skipped and every cleaner does the job the same way. A good one has five parts:

  1. 1The rooms or areasIn the order you walk through them, ending at the door you leave by.
  2. 2The tasks in each roomTop to bottom: high dusting, then surfaces, then floors last.
  3. 3How oftenEvery visit, weekly, monthly or seasonal, so a regular clean stays short.
  4. 4Which clean it is forA standard visit, a deep clean, a move-out or a turnover.
  5. 5A place to tick or signSo the client, a manager or the next shift can see it was done.

FAQ

Cleaning checklist questions

What should be on a cleaning checklist?

The rooms or areas in the order you walk through them, the tasks in each room from top to bottom, how often each task is done, and a place to tick or sign. A checklist for a deep or move-out clean adds the jobs a regular visit skips, such as inside the oven, fridge and cabinets.

What order should you clean a house in?

Room by room, and inside each room from top to bottom: high dusting first, then counters and surfaces, then floors last, so dust never falls on a part you already cleaned. Do dry tasks like dusting before wet ones like mopping, and finish at the door you leave by.

Can I download these cleaning checklists as a PDF?

Yes. Every checklist has a free PDF with no sign-up: a branded, two-column printable with tick boxes and lines for the client, date and cleaner. Use the PDF button on any card above, or on the checklist itself.

Can I put a cleaning checklist on my own website?

Yes. Pick a checklist under "Put a checklist on your website", copy the code and paste it into an HTML or embed block. Your visitors can tick tasks off, print it or download the PDF, and it stays up to date as we improve the list.

What is the difference between a standard, deep and move-out checklist?

The regular weekly or every-other-week visit. A deep clean is everything in a standard clean, plus the build-up: inside the oven and fridge, baseboards by hand, blinds, tracks. A move-out clean is for an empty home, inside every cabinet, closet and appliance, ready for the walk-through.

Can I make my own cleaning checklist?

Yes. The free checklist maker lets you pick the type of clean, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, switch tasks off and add your own, then print it with tick boxes. The schedule maker spreads chores across the week instead.

Do offices and other commercial buildings need a different checklist?

Usually, yes. Commercial checklists are organized by area and by frequency (daily, weekly, monthly), and buildings such as medical offices, schools, daycares and restaurants have health rules on what to disinfect and how. Each commercial checklist here links to the agency guidance it is based on.
