How to get a burnt smell out of your house after burnt food

To get a burnt smell out of a house, take the burnt pan outside, open windows on opposite sides and run the range hood and a box fan facing out for an hour. Then wash the smoky film off the stove, cabinets, walls and fabrics, set out bowls of baking soda, and run an air purifier with an activated carbon filter. Most burnt food smells clear in one to three days.

Step by step: how to get a burnt smell out of your house after burnt food

Safety first. If there was an actual fire beyond a pan of burnt food, or smoke spread through the house, make sure the fire is fully out and call the fire department if you are unsure. Do not use an ozone generator in an occupied home, and never mix vinegar or ammonia cleaners with bleach.

  1. 1

Get the source out of the house

Once it is cool, carry the burnt pan, toaster crumbs or charred food outside or seal them in a trash bag and take it out. Soak the pan outdoors. As long as the source is inside, it keeps putting smell into the air.

  2. 2

Cross-ventilate for at least an hour

Open windows on opposite sides of the house, run the range hood and bathroom fans, and put a box fan in a window facing out to pull smoky air through. Close doors to rooms the smoke did not reach so you do not spread it.

  3. 3

Clean the stove, oven and microwave

Wipe the cooktop, oven door, range hood and microwave inside and out with warm soapy water. Burnt residue left in a microwave or on an oven floor will smell again every time it heats up. Wash or replace the range hood grease filter.

  4. 4

Wash the smoky film off hard surfaces

Smoke leaves a thin oily film on walls, cabinets and counters, and that film holds the smell. Wash them with a gallon of warm water and a tablespoon of dish soap, starting with the room where the burn happened and working outward. Wipe from the bottom up so drips do not streak, then rinse with clean water.

  5. 5

    Launder fabrics and curtains

Wash curtains, dish towels, throw blankets and pillow covers in the warmest water the care labels allow, with a half cup of white vinegar in the rinse. Smoky fabrics may need two washes. Air them outside if you can.

  6. 6

    Deodorize carpets and upholstery

Sprinkle baking soda over rugs, carpet and fabric furniture, leave it for several hours or overnight, then vacuum thoroughly. Set open bowls of baking soda or bags of activated charcoal in the affected rooms for a few days.

  7. 7

Change the HVAC filter and run the fan

If your furnace or AC ran while the smoke was in the air, the filter has trapped smoky particles and will keep releasing the smell. Put in a new filter and set the system fan to on for a few hours.

  8. 8

Filter the air for a few days

Run an air purifier with an activated carbon filter in the room where the burn happened. Carbon filters target odors and gases, while a HEPA-only purifier mainly catches the particles. Keep windows open when the weather allows.

Why does a burnt smell linger for days?

The smell lingers because smoke is made of tiny particles and gases that settle on every surface and soak into fabric, so airing the room out only clears what is still floating.

That is why washing matters more than air fresheners. Burnt popcorn and scorched oil are among the worst, because the smoke is oily and sticks to walls and cabinets. A spray or candle only covers the smell for an hour; cleaning the film off surfaces and fabrics removes it. If the smell is tobacco smoke rather than burnt food, see our guide to getting rid of smoke smell, which covers thirdhand smoke residue.

Do air purifiers and ozone machines remove burnt smells?

An air purifier with an activated carbon filter helps; an ozone generator is not a good choice in a home where people and pets are breathing the air.

The EPA’s guide to air cleaners in the home explains that most filters are designed for either particles or gases, and that many air cleaners carry two filters so they handle both, including gases that cause odors. Look for one with a real carbon bed rather than a thin carbon-dusted sheet, and size it for the room.

The EPA’s page on ozone generators sold as air cleaners says no federal agency has approved them for use in occupied spaces, that ozone can harm health at high concentrations, and that at levels within public health standards ozone is not effective at removing many odor-causing chemicals. Restoration companies do sometimes run ozone in an empty house after a fire, with everyone out, but it is not a do-it-yourself tool.

How much cleaning does your burnt smell need?

Scale the job to how much smoke there was. A scorched pot needs an hour of airing; a smoky oven fire needs the whole kitchen washed.

After a larger fire, the US Fire Administration’s after-a-fire resources cover safety checks, salvage and recovery before you start cleaning.

How to keep it from happening again

Stay in the kitchen while you cook on the stovetop, and keep a lid nearby. Most burnt smells start as unattended cooking.

The US Fire Administration calls cooking the leading cause of home fires and home fire injuries, and advises keeping a pan lid or baking sheet nearby to cover a pan if it catches fire. Set a timer when you leave anything in the oven, and clean spills off the oven floor so they do not burn on the next bake, as in our guide to cleaning an oven.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Spraying air freshener instead of cleaning, which masks the smell for an hour and adds a second scent.
  • Leaving the burnt pan in the sink, where it keeps releasing odor.
  • Forgetting the HVAC filter, which spreads trapped smoke smell every time the system runs.
  • Running an ozone generator while people or pets are home.
  • Washing walls top down with a dripping sponge, which leaves streaks through the smoke film.

Products that make this easier

Optional. Everything above works with basic supplies; these just save time or effort.

  • For a room

    LEVOIT Core 300 Air Purifier

A compact purifier whose standard filter combines HEPA media with an activated carbon layer for odors. For heavy smoke smell, look at its toxin absorber or smoke remover filter options.

  • Passive odor absorber

    Moso Natural Air Purifying Bag

A bag of bamboo charcoal you set in a room or closet to absorb lingering odor. It works slowly, so use it alongside cleaning, not instead of it.

  • For carpets and bowls

Arm & Hammer Baking Soda (large box)

Sprinkle it on rugs and upholstery overnight and leave open bowls in smoky rooms. Vacuum it up thoroughly so it does not clog the vacuum filter.

  • For greasy smoke film

    Krud Kutter Original Cleaner/Degreaser

Cuts the oily residue that burnt food and grease smoke leave on cabinets and painted walls. Test on flat paint first and rinse with clean water.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long does burnt smell stay in a house?

A light burnt food smell usually fades in a few hours to a day with ventilation. Heavier smoke can linger for days or weeks until you wash the walls, fabrics and HVAC filter.

Does boiling vinegar get rid of burnt smell?

Simmering a pot of water and vinegar can help freshen the air for a while, but it does not remove the smoky film on surfaces. Wash surfaces and fabrics for a lasting fix.

Does baking soda absorb burnt smell?

Yes, it helps on carpets and upholstery and in open bowls, especially overnight. It works best after you have aired the house out and cleaned hard surfaces.

How do you get burnt popcorn smell out of a house?

Take the bag outside, ventilate, and clean the microwave with a bowl of water and lemon or vinegar heated for a few minutes, then wipe it down. Wash nearby walls and cabinets if the smell spread.

Is it safe to sleep in a house that smells burnt?

After a minor kitchen burn that has been aired out, usually yes. If smoke was heavy, a fire happened, or anyone has trouble breathing, stay elsewhere and have the home checked.
